Michael Giacchino
“Labor Of Love”
Star Trek (2009)From the scene where George Kirk sets the U.S.S. Kelvin for a collision course with Nero’s ship, and in the span of a minute or so picks a name out for his son - Jim - and tells his wife Winona that he loves her. Truly one of the most heartbreaking scenes from the entire Trek oeuvre.
We saw Star Trek again this week. The scene described above which I previously blogged about, KILLS me everytime I see it. Most of my familiarity with Giacchino’s music is through the show LOST, and this song resembles some of his compositions for that show-it’s very grand, open, emotional, optimistic and yet sad at the same time. Also, it is juxtaposed against shots of stuff blowing up, which also happens in LOST.
Michael Giacchino is really good at breaking hearts! Whenever tunes like this come on I find myself trying to hold back the waterworks. They turn off the sound in the scene and turn up the Giacchino music, and then I’m crying over the death of George Kirk, or Penny picking up the phone to hear her long lost love, Desmond, or anything having to do with Sun and Jin becuase they have the saddest love of all!
Anyway, if you watch LOST, you probably know what I mean, but if not, then the video below probably makes no sense.

This was a brilliant scene, and the track worked wonderfully — just the right mix of poignancy and triumph.
