Spring has sprung, at least for Grandpa Bunny it has! Coming soon to the Storybook Puppet Theater.
Here’s another piece of puppet scenery I did this winter, or re-did. I originally designed this temple proscenium for The Puppet Company’s Aesop’s Fables show in 2009 and got a chance to freshen it up and make it better this year using Randal’s new and improved surface for prosceniums. Basically painting the same idea but better. A pretty cool challenge since when I originally tackled this three years ago I didn’t have the knowledge or skills to make the final piece look like what I had in my mind. Now I’m a lot more comfortable painting large pieces so this was a lot of fun and I’m happy with the final results. Yep. Just took me three years to make it happen :)
Velveteen Rabbit! In all the hubub of life I nearly forgot to mention that the scenery I painted for this puppet show is finally on view at Children’s Fairyland until the end of December. It’s always been one of my favorite stories and I’m glad I got a chance to paint for it. I’ll post more photos later on, hopefully on a new portfolio page I’m working on.
Super excited about almost finishing my latest project- scenic paintings for The Velveteen Rabbit puppet show! My Mary Blair doll looks on to the final scene. Just a few more final touches to go and I will have one less thing on my plate, woohoo!
Saw this beautiful shadow puppet show last night by the Oregon Shadow Theatre. It was so amazing!!!!!!! Video/photo documentation does not come even close to capturing the elegance and nostalgia of watching their live performance.
Happy 75th Birthday Jim Henson! In honor of the occasion I shall share with you a couple of my muppet related artworks- one is an awesomely bad drawing of Kermit and Cookie Monster that I made 10 years ago! I’m happy to say that I think my drawing has improved a bit since then.
Next are my thumbnail sketches for the Jim Henson/Kermit painting I did for my Color Theory class…oh, such wonderful possibilities to explore in the thumbnail stages, none of which made it to the final, haha. Yes, those are supposed to be Kermit eyes adorning Jim’s fluffy shirt. I posted the painting a while back here, and here again is the time lapse gif of it coming alive (Thanks again, Michael!).

Also, happy 50 years to the Bay Area Puppetry Guild, who will be tearing it up puppet style during tonight’s celebration.
Finished restoring some scenery for a puppet show tonight. The style was inspired by Tommy Ungerer’s illustrations for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
I thought I was a good puppeteer, UNTIL I WATCHED THIS. As it turns out, I’m nothing.
A video of me painting the Sky God background for The Puppet Company’s production of Anansi the Spider. Michael helped in redesigning the scenery I painted last year so that it will fit in the larger stage and blend in with Lewis Mahlmann’s scenery. It will be performed for the next few weeks at the Storybook Puppet Theater of Children’s Fairyland, so yay!
If everyone could see the world the way Kenneth sees it, it would be a better place to live!
